A studio project that is handled with domestic diligence, gains or looses by the grace of the multi-instrumentalist’s versatile talents. In GuitarGarden you’ll get two, Pete Prown and Rich Maloof, both very experienced string players and guitar journalists (the former formerly with Guitar Shop magazine and now Vintage Guitar, the latter being the former editor-in-chief of reputed Guitar magazine). Men who know what they’re playing and talking about, and you’ll hear it. They even have invented a new genre, at least that’s what they call World Progressive. Consider it a fusion between world music and prog. No wonder Peter Gabriel is mentioned as prime source of inspiration, besides Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Flower Kings. “China Rose” is a nice and rather mellow collection of instrumental miniatures, with Asian motives neatly interwoven. Keyboards and samples evoke an eastern feel through ethnic beats and catchy grooves, but also guitar synthesizers are thrown in to salute our yellow friends. The interesting thing about this album is that you get two different guitar styles placed along and against each other: the rock, fusion and blues background of Prown on the one hand, the acoustic fingerstyle of Maloof on the other. The result is a nice listening session that however has but a few progressive ideas to offer in terms of composition and performance. |
