Blue Funk is the
third album of Giles, a blues band founded by multi instrumentalist
Mark Koehorst in 2002.
Starting of with
a very funky blues song, Giles succeed in drawing the listener’s
attention. Rhythmic percussion, a great bass guitar and enchanting
Hammond organ form the basis for the terrific “The Chase”. And they
don’t disappoint as the album goes on. In ”CC Rider” they make a
perfect adaptation of an original blues song. One can almost see the
workers on the cotton fields while listening to this song and Mark
Koehorst’s guitar is just great. Mark proves to be a master of the
blues. His guitar puts the perfect emotion in every song and gets
sheer highlights in “Lost a Friend” and the magnificent slow but
funky blues song “So Much Pain”, my absolute favourite on this
album.
Mark and Piet may
have been born in the land of the windmill, they sure got the blues
running through their veins. Listen to “Watchdog” with its perfect
intro and you’ll know what I mean.
The swinging
“Keep on Dancing” reminds me a bit of some of David Gilmour’s solo
work.
Giles
borrowed two songs from music legends JJ Cale and Stephen Stills:
“Clyde” and “Black Queen”. Perfectly performed, I must admit –
listen to the gorgeous guitar on “Clyde” – but Mark Koehorst
obviously is talented enough to write masterpieces himself. |
