Landscapes begins very bombastically and reminds as such of Rick Wakeman’s epic works “Myths and legends of King Arthur…” and “Journey to the centre of the earth”. Very promising of course and during a few tracks I got the impression that Fritsch might fulfil my expectations. The moog sounds very much like when Wakeman plays it and in the first track I sometimes got the impression to be travelling to the centre of the earth once again. The best comparison to be made is combining Rick Wakeman with Kitaro an Jean Michel Jarre. There are two weak aspects to this album: it gradually tends more towards new age music and becomes too smooth to begin with and Eloy Fritsch plays all the instruments himself. This means that all instruments are synthesizer or computer arranged, so you don’t get real drums either. A shame because I really like some parts of this cd. Fritsch undoubtly knows how to play a synthesizer and at times gets very near to the virtuosity of Rick Wakeman. “Landscapes”, “Teleportation” and “Imaginary Voyage” to name just a few are great compositions. Provide this artist with a real band, a producer perhaps and I’m sure the quality of his work would go from not bad at all to very good. The nice cover artwork in real fantasy style is an exact example of the created atmosphere on the cd. |
