It’s always a thrill to discover a new kind of music. Fluttr
Effect’s music is as amazing as the band’s name. It’s a merge of
pop, rock and a mixture of classical and electronic techniques. The
use of a MIDI marimba and electric cello is not what I would call
standard in rock.
Still the traditional rock elements are there: pounding drums and
heavy guitars are the core of the more steaming tracks. But then
again there’s all of a sudden the lonesome solo of the cello. And
just when you think the rhythm has completely gone the guitars and
drum take over and hell breaks loose for a while. Don’t be surprised
if you hear the marimba amidst a heavy guitar solo. The rhythm
changes show a lot of guts and the silent passages are full of
mystery as if there were some voodoo ritual taking place. Especially
“Prison” with Kara Trott’s wordless singing sounds very haunting.
Perhaps the most surprising thing is that the bass is totally
forgone. Indeed, there’s no bass guitar and yet this gives no sense
of poverty to the music at all, it’s as if the heavy guitars can
fill up the gap completely and at other times the bass part is taken
over by the cello.
Comparisons are very hard to be made as this cd sounds so original
and unique. Sometimes the Cocteau Twins crossed my mind and the
style of singing sometimes reminds of Patti Smith and
“Detrentalisman” made me think of Anne Clarck. Surely this is a cd
one should listen to over and over again, as in most tracks there
are no catchy choruses that keep on lingering in your head. Except
for “I want you now” (see clip on website), a great song that will
even be enjoyed by fans of gothic rock. But overall, it’s as if rock
has been gently put aside in order to focus on the mere art of
music.
There’s something mysterious about Fluttr Effect and it’s worth
while discovering. It can’t be a coincidence that they won the
Emergenza music contest beating 600 U.S. bands.
This is not common at all, but it’s very good!
