Echolyn’s music is not always the easiest to listen to. Remember Mei (2002), an album I had quite a problem with. Their latest album also requires several sessions of listening before you can form your opinion. But if you do the effort, you will come to the conclusion that this is a rather fabulous album.
Progrock, no doubt, but there are plenty of other influences as well. The start is quite heavy and pulsating and the raw vocals give the track a very urgent character. Despite the complexity of “Georgia Pine”, its melody is very catching. This opening track reminds me a bit of King Crimson, as does “Make Me Sway”. In the very varied “Heavy Blue Miles” one can hear even funky influences. Also the rhythm in “So Ready” is very funky; very nice drumming here! “Lovesick Morning” (10 minutes!) starts legato and blends into a very nice melody that sounds very much like the Beatles. I thought John Lennon had passed away a long time ago? Klaatu lovers will discover some similarities as well. A gorgeous and timeless song! There are also quite some Spock’s Beard passages.
Give this album some time, because you have to find your way through the complexity time and again. Don’t expect a number of weeping guitar solos, ‘cause you won’t find them. But if you like prog and you like Spock’s Beard, you will really enjoy listening to this cd!
