Ever heard
about Cloux? Until a few weeks ago he was totally unknown for me
too, but ‘Full Fool’ is one of many ‘one man projects’, having
reached our redaction Sylvain Ducloux (alias Cloux) is a french
guitar player from the school of progressive fusion, this mini-CD
(total duration only 21 minutes) is his debute. He wrote all songs,
was responsible for the recording, plays guitar, bass and
‘programming drums’, he made an appeal to some of his friends for
the vocals and bass lines. In the past he was fooling around in the
world of experimental jazz-rock (full of asymmetric rhythms) and
guitar techniques à la Satriani and Malmsteen, and those influences
are clearly present on this cd.
All tracks are
full of rhythm and tempo changes, more than you normally would
expect in about 3 minutes, that makes you remind of Frank Zappa. The
guitar riffs are often very ‘technical’ with a jazz rock feeling.
And yet this energy, aggressiveness and intensity has a strong
interplay with melodic fragments, which gives the music a
progressive touch. The vocals in the first track are just some
strange, towards ‘death metal’ tending voices, on ‘Burp’ (the title
says it all) burping is being glorified as an art, and Fleurry seems
to be very keen in it. But I can barely hear if the man can sing,
luckily this is an instrumental album in the first place. And even
if the ‘programmed drums’ sounds very good, I would like to hear a
real drummer in the future, although it has to be a very ‘technical’
one, considering the kind of music Cloux is making. Anyway, this
music is original enough, maybe the works of the brothers Rodler are
the closest reference. The production is excellent, taking into
account this is an ‘autoproduction’.
The title and the humoristic parts on the cd show that the man does
not want to be taken too serious, but he has enough talent to make a
strong full cd. And if he can count on a good singer and drummer,
than I am sure we can expect an excellent album, considering the
compositional talents of the man. |
