Although my interest for rock music started somewhere around 1980, it is the music of the early 70’s that is probably closest to my heart. There are quite a lot of new bands that are going back to that era, with either modern music firmly based in those roots, or just blatant rip-offs of classic bands. I don’t object to either, to be honest. Circulus is one of those bands. Mixing touches of Jethro Tull, Jefferson Airplane, early Pink Floyd, Renaissance, Focus and –more recently- Blackmore’s Night, they deliver a fine album. Filled with vintage moog sounds, lots of flutes, recorders and other traditional instruments, and some great guitar, this album sounds as if it was recorded way back in 1970. Significant is also the guest spot for Marianne Segal, singer of 70’s folk rock band Jade, on “Swallow”, an unreleased Jade song, which is definitely one of the highlights of the album. Other great songs are “My Body Is Made Of Sunlight”, a pretty straightforward folk rock song, and “The Aphid”, the most psychedelic track. My favourite, though, is the moving ballad “Candlelight”, featuring some beautiful sounds and excellent, fragile vocals. The last song, “Power To The Pixies”, with its irresistible melody, also deserves a special mention. While the title, “The Lick On The Tip Of An Envelope To Be Sent” is quite a mouthful, the music is very pleasing, at least to these ears. Especially in a time when my desk is flooded with still-to-be-reviewed items, it becomes clear that there’s actually very little uniqueness going around in today’s music. Among the large number of mostly progressive or melodic metal releases, I found this curious little thing very refreshing. If the term ‘progressive/psychedelic folk rock’ appeals to you, then Circulus might be just the band for you. |
