Bruce Turgon may not be a household name, but his career has been going on from quite a way back. He was a member of Lou Gramm’s pre-Foreigner band Black Sheep and played with bands like Warrior and Prism, before rejoining the famous singer in the Lou Gramm Band and Shadow King. When Gramm returned to Foreigner in 1994, Turgon followed him and replaced Rick Wills in the band as the bassist. Apart from that, he’s also written the music for quite a few TV projects (a.o. the Stargate SG-1 television series). It is no surprise then that Lou Gramm appears as a guest on Turgon’s first solo album, “Outside Looking In”. And if you’re a fan of the singer, you will find much to love on this album, with certainly a lot of likenesses to the stellar Shadow King album. “Outside Looking In” is truly a solo album, as Turgon did most himself: lead vocals, bass, rhythm guitar and keyboards, plus he produced the album. Guitar solos are provided by Rocket Ritchotte (Steppenwolf), Scott McKinstry and none other that Ronnie Montrose. Denny Carmassi (Montrose, Heart, Whitesnake) played the drums and background vocalists are Gramm, Ricky Phillips, Tom Gimbel and Diana Mills. It was high time Turgon came out of the shadows, because what he produced here is an absolutely fantastic album. “Living A Lie” opens magnificently, with a hook-laden, Foreigner-like rocker. It is immediately clear that Turgon’s voice is not that far removed from Gramm’s, with very similar vocal mannerisms, although he sounds a bit raspier. Excellent singing. What follows is a collection of great, melodic and powerful songs, with “Outside Looking In”, “Walk Thru Fire” and “These Tears Must Fall” as my personal favourites. Some of the songs were originally written for the second Shadow King album - which never came to be – and it shows. “Outside Looking In” is arguably as good, and if you liked Shadow King, this one will please you just as much. |
