It’s always dangerous to announce that a (new) band ha been strongly
influenced by a super band like Pink Floyd. This creates great
expectations. Perhaps this is why I was a bit doubtful after having
listened to this album once. One week later I’ve played it several
times and I’ve been able to form my opinion.
First of all, this is a French band singing in English and to my
relief the singer’s accent is very acceptable. Grima has got a warm
voice and sings well. There are some Pink Floyd influences indeed,
but this music has its own character, keeping the middle between
progressive and symphonic rock. The songs are well composed and
produced, most of them very peaceful and emotional but with a
certain urge in them. Listen to the magnificent bass guitar on “Face
the Truth” and although Grima is no Gilmour his guitar weeps
gently in this song. Other songs are up tempo and have a strong
drive that makes you want to turn up the volume..
The weakest element is the drumming. Its often quite stereotype with
the same irritating roll over and over again. Perhaps Rousset should
listen to Pink Floyd a bit more. It’s not how often, but exactly
when you beat the drum that creates the magic. And yet, he knows how
to do it, ‘cause the intro of “Somewhere Between Here and There” is
pure magic and the drumming just perfect. That goes for Lost too. So
don’t shoot the drummer: I’m quite sure he will grow together with
the band.
And there sure is a lot of potential in this starting band. Almost
all songs were composed by Jeremie Grima and of course they can’t be
compared with the masterpieces of Pink Floyd, but now and again one
can already notice a sparkle of genius.
The piano is more than just good and the use of the cello in “Where
Are U?” is wonderful.
I’m looking forward to hearing their second album and you should be
buying their first… This is more than average! |
