The first, self-titled Alien album (1988) is a bit of an AOR classic – you may remember their hit single, an interesting cover of the Bee Gees’ “Only One Woman”. The band was formed by guitarist Tony Borg and vocalist Jim Jidhed, and they enjoyed quite a bit of success with this debut. But Jidhed left the band soon after that first record. He was replaced by Peter Sandberg, who didn’t stay with the band for very long either. The band recorded a couple more albums with Daniel Zangger Borch at the mike stand, before disbanding in 1994. Now, Borg and Jidhed have reunited for a comeback album, “Dark Eyes”, which is released by Frontiers Records. Surprisingly, this is not the AOR album fans have been waiting for, but an effort more in the direction of classic rock. The album starts out very promisingly: “Dark Eyes” is a strong opener with a great chorus and fantastic backing vocals. “Don’t Go Away” is vintage classic rock with a great melody and a nice bluesy interlude. “Oh Sarah” is a terrific ‘80s style aor ballad. Sadly, they can’t uphold this kind of quality. “Wild One”, “Lethal Woman” and “Fire” are just by-the-numbers hard rock songs. “Fallen Eagle” is a rather lame attempt at an epic song and if I ever hear bland songs with criminally over-used lyrics like: “Are you ready to rock ‘n roll? Are you ready to let yourself go?”, I think I’ll go crazy. They redeem themselves, though, with “Riding With The Wind”, and “Sherylee”, another nice ballad.
All in all, a very decent album, but not exactly up to the band’s
standard and hardly an essential purchase. |
