Progressive Metal

Review by
Danny Focke

We’ve got a new progmetal band in Belgium and I don’t need to be chauvinistic to like them, because they are really good. I got to hear some samples, some time ago and I have to say that the progress they made since then is astonishing. Of course, since that time they added a keyboard player to their line-up and he really makes a great difference. But on their site, you can find the news that their keyboard player has been replaced by a second guitar player. (Alex Van Haesendonck)
The first track is already a good start in which you can already discover the quality of the musicians. The balance isn’t always perfect on this album, because the voice of the narrator is a bit too silent en also the keyboards could have been more in front. But don’t forget this is a demo and these are only details.
“Even Gods” is even better. The guest singer, Dorien, has a good voice and helps the song to a higher level. Again the other musicians are doing a great job and there’s a lot happening in this song.
But my favourite, and I suppose this will be every one’s favourite track, is “L’Idiot Savant”. The musicians are playing so tightly together on this track. The rhythmic piano interweaves perfect with the guitar and the bass and the drums give an excellent support in this beautiful instrumental. I hope that more of this stuff will get on their future full CD.
“The Old Forest” is a bit too long for me. The length is inversely proportional to the quality. A lot of themes are repeated too often and the vocals of Dorien are not as good as in “Even Gods”. Her voice doesn’t really fit for this kind of music and her vocal melody line could have been better. I’m sure I would like it if it were shorter, because I like some of the themes in this track
My criticism on the vocals aren’t that important, because they have a new vocalist (Sven Dupon), who’s a real member of the band now. I’m curious to hear the next demo or maybe the first full CD?

Zero Gravity is surely a new discovery for progmetal fans. Sometimes they make the tracks a bit too complex and there’s some danger that the musicians want to show how good they really are, but that feeling disappears when you get to know the songs better.

You can listen to some samples of this demo on www.zerogravityband.be
If you remember your Physics from school, gravity doesn’t change your real weight. So even with Zero Gravity they really carry some weight.
