Imagine finding yourself in a cosmic storm with electric waves surrounding you. This is the feeling you get when you put on Subspace Radio. Then the synthesizers and drums open very bombastically joined in by guitars. A very promising start indeed. The following guitar riff surprised me and it took me some time to realize that I was listening to the chords of Foreigner’s Cold as Ice. I guess it’s okay to borrow an excellent riff, especially when you mix it in a song that’s very original and powerful. Open Skies blends into Timeline without interruption and suddenly you find yourself in a second quite overwhelming song in which the rhythm and the easy to catch up melody guarantee a lot of pleasure to the listener. This album contains powerful progressive guitar rock with short but great guitar solos that sometimes make you think of Van Halen. The music however is far more sophisticated and reminds me a bit of Spock’s Beard, although on the whole it is more accessible. All progressive elements are there and the harmony of the instruments is good. The vocals are alright but in “Generation” they try to bring some close harmony like thing and as far as I’m concerned they better hadn’t. But let’s not fuss about the details: this is a great album, especially if you like guitars and some powerful drumming (not to be confused with hitting the drums as hard and as often as possible!). There’s not one weak track and it’s even difficult to make out which is your favourite one. I’m not sure myself: “The Clans” is great, but also “Timeline” is fantastic! Perhaps it would be best if you bought the album and decide for yourself… This Finnish band surely has a lot of potential and I’m already looking forward to some new material. |
