Skyron Orchestra
is yet another retro rock band from Sweden. On their self-titled
debut album, they go back in time to the late 60’s / early 70’s to
explore the psychedelic music of that era. Names like The Doors,
Jefferson Airplane and early Pink Floyd come to mind.
Eloy as well, perhaps because Veronica Lostjärna’s vocals are
nearly as heavily accented as Frank Bornemann’s.
A
set of decent songs, with “The Tunnel”, “Soft Palate” and “Pax
Aeterna” being the ones that stand out most. There’s very little
variation, though, which makes listening to the whole album in one
sitting a bit tiresome. Pretty decent musicianship; I especially
like the guitar sound. Most obvious feature is the typical Doors-like
organ sound that is all over the album. As for the vocals, well,
this may be both the band’s strongest and weakest point. Most
singers in the psychedelic tradition didn’t have the greatest
voices, and the monotone sound was one of the typical features of
the style. Still, all those singers did have something magical about
them, that almost hypnotical extra that is so hard to describe.
Although I must admit Veronica Lostjärna’s voice fits the music
well, she doesn’t have that extra touch of magic I need in this
style of music. This is one of those voices you either love or hate,
and I’m afraid I’m more inclined towards the latter.
I
catch myself enjoying a lot of the songs, right up to the point
where Lostjärna starts singing. Not a bad album, but those vocals
spoil most of the fun for me. |
