Rock Star Scientist’s debut cd is far from a unity. The three tracks
that it contains have got nothing in common. It is as if the
band-members are experimenting not knowing which path they should
follow.
‘Apollo’ is a science-fiction/new age oriented piece of work that
seems to have been influenced a lot by Kitaro. It’s nice to listen
to and could be a futuristic lullaby. But then again, that’s all
there is to say about it. Nothing new, really. The song’s atmosphere
is totally broken by the last few seconds where there’s a heavy
guitar and drum outro. I don’t get the meaning of that.
‘Brain check’ is of a totally different kind. A lot of piano
improvisation against a jazzy background. The group wanders around
through an acid jazz landscape. There’s a slight reminiscence of
Focus but it’s rather monotonous.
I
prefer the longest track on this mini-album. ‘Oblivion’ is a strong,
instrumental progressive rock song. It starts off as a remake of
Queen’s Flash Gordon title track. The rhythm is very high, the
elaborate guitar solo’s are of a high technical quality and makes
one think of the guitar-genius Jan Akkerman. Also the rhythm changes
are good. However, the band tends to repeat the theme endlessly and
therefore the song loses of it’s power.
The whole of the record seems to be a well recorded jam session.
It’s obvious that the group needs to decide which direction to take.
I would go for prog-rock, guys. The potential is definitely there! |
