It’s
difficult to reduce Superb Birth to a common denominator. The
Swedish band has put a lot of variation on this album.
Superb Birth was originally released in 1999, but Tempus Fugit
/ Inside Out
is
now taking care of a worldwide re-release. And I can only justify
this decision because this band has too many qualities to linger in
Scandinavia.
Right away, the opener Do you want to see the sun is a bull’s
eye. A very catchy song that has some references to RPWL But the
comparison with RPWL doesn’t hold further than this track. The
second track Lobby starts of with a grungy guitar and
contains some elements that have an American feeling about them.
Especially the southern sound from the American music scene
is clearly present in a lot of the tracks. Think about Lynyrd
Skynyrd and Joan Osbourne, but also Neil Young.
There’s also some solid rock music, for example in Into the heat
and Really Something.
As
mentioned earlier, you also find some grunge influences on this
album. “Did I go wrong”, a track with a lingering guitar and
ditto vocals could be a hybrid between Pearl Jam and Suede.
Dinosaur spaceship could also serve as model for that statement.
If
you read this review, you could get the impression that this CD
contains a colourful hotchpotch of songs, but that’s not really the
truth. The diversity of tracks makes this album so appealing and the
splendid vocals of Patrick Lundström are certainly worth mentioning.
Superb Birth is a very modern Progrock album. Hardly any solos, but
that doesn’t alter the attractiveness of this album. |
