Scandinavia is a well-known birthplace for progressive music in a darker vein. It must have something to do with its long winters. Yet one can create their own sunny world here, like Kaipa and their heirs The Flower Kings are proving. Their uplifting sound must have appealed to the guys of Prime Mover, a Finnish band of… Swedes. Belonging to the Swedish minority of six percent, they began a search for their own musical identity. And so they came out with what they call folk prog. Indeed, there is a vintage prog flavour to their music, but they tackle arrangements in a jazzy or folksy way by integrating trumpet, bouzouki (lute), violin and Swedish vocals. The diverse influences blend tastefully together here. The melodies aren’t that adventurous, but that’s made up for by the nice harmonic changes that flow naturally. The album keeps your interest going, since alternating moods are sought for. And yet, my favourite is the more traditional prog of “Öppen”, reminding me happily of early Kaipa. In the end this record stands firm because of the power of its conviction. These guys honestly cherish their ambition to explore new musical ground, which remains the basic idea of prog. And yet, what we hear isn’t quite new, but well crafted and accessible music tackled in a different way. Their quest for ‘unique’ music is far from ended. This is already their third, self-financed album, presenting some very fine musicianship and a good recording. It’s about time Prime Mover find their selves a professional producer and label, so this Nordic outfit can finally outgrow its status of charming promise. You can order the album at www.firebox.fi |
