Melodic Hard Rock

Review by
Claude 'Clayreon' Bosschem

Mennen is the new band of Jos Mennen, who had a big hit, “Love or Loneliness”, more than 10 years ago with a group called Zinatra. For his new album, he collaborated with producer Erwin Musper, a man who has also contributed to the works of Van Halen, Metallica and The Scorpions. Van Halen has been an obvious source of inspiration for the ‘Freakazoid’ album, with its heavy rock, excellent vocals, strong production and solid songs. In short, this is a very strong album, although it has little to do with progressive rock. But this kind of story has been told before.

The album opens with “Down”, a mid tempo, catchy, hard rock song with a typical whistling segment. It is soon to be released as a single with its accompanying video clip. I’m curious how popular it will be?! Even though it’s a rock song, it shouldn’t be considered inferior to any of the other big names in rock and roll. Besides, there are several other songs on the CD that could be hits as well. This is melodic hard rock that’s based on sturdy guitar riffs and vocals which are supported by an obvious but nicely balanced rhythm section. And how a real rock album should be, ballads such as “Above the Waterline” (very nice harmonies), “Secrets and Lies” and “Believe” (a voice that sounds a bit like Sting and with fabulous guitar work), shouldn’t be absent. Now and again there’s some pop rock, such as “It’s Over”, which sounds a bit like The Police. The song “Rain” is a heavy, hard rock tune with a catchy chorus and a cool guitar solo, very similar to Van Halen. The album ends on an even heavier note with “Wicked White”, but you really can’t say that it’s metal.

‘Freakazoid’ (apparently, the title for this album was inspired by a cartoon) attracts attention for its excellent production and good compositions. Now we just have to wait and see if Mennen can reach the public. Hopefully, ‘Freakazoid’ won’t fall between the cracks. The coming months will have to prove it.
