Is this a good album? Yes it is.
Is this an album we’ve all been waiting for? No, it isn’t.
If you want to cut a long story short, that’s what you can say about
the first solo album from Kings X drummer Jerry Gaskill.
One can’t say this is progressive rock. The songs are too smoothly
arranged for that and instruments aren’t profoundly present. There’s
no room for real guitar-solo’s to say one thing.
On the other hand, one can’t deny that this is good music. The
problem however is that one gets the impression that there’s nothing
new here. You’ve heard it all before.
And that’s a pity, because it’s beyond doubt that this album has got
it’s qualities.
The first song gives the impression that this album contains a lot
of metal-elements. This is not true, however. On the contrary.
Gaskill lets you listen to some very easy-listening pop-rock in
which Beatles-influences very often aren’t far away. Psychedelic
influences combined with a very professional Beatles-like pop-song
basis, that’s what most of the album brings. There are moments where
the music reminds you of the early Pink Floyd, and at times it
resembles the sound of R.P.W.L. on ‘God has Failed’.
To summarize, it’s all a bit too smooth to be great. It’s too
recognizable to be original and too ‘easy’ to be catchy.
But nevertheless, it’s nice to listen to. I’m afraid, however, that
there are more breath-taking releases you’d like to spend your money
on.
