We like to pigeonhole music in specified styles. That way, it’s nice
and easy to classify CD’s and it’s very straightforward for us,
reviewers, to describe a piece of music. Cloon is one of
those bands that make life very difficult for us.
For how can you start describing such a mishmash of different styles
and influences? In their bios, the four band members mention, among
others, Tool, Primus, Frank Zappa, Faith No
More, Dave Weckl, Planet X, Django Reinhardt,
Wes Montgomery, Pink Floyd and Pixies as their
influences. And you can hear them in Cloon’s music. All of
them. This is not exactly my cup of tea, though I have to admit I
respect these boys for creating a style of their own out of this
mixture of influences.
Cloon
is a Belgian band, that until recently was an instrumental trio.
With (hardly melodic) singer Tom Claus now in their ranks, they have
recorded a second demo. Cloon is one of those bands that will
probably never appeal to a large audience, but that will assemble a
very loyal following of fans, who won’t accept one single word of
criticism about these musical geniuses.
The average music buff probably won’t know how to handle this, and
I’m afraid I’m with them. But those loyal followers are probably
proclaiming right this minute that we just don’t understand. And who
is to counter them?
If you’re in doubt: contact the band and try out this CD. Isn’t that
what demos are for? |
