Anubis Gate was
formed in 2001 by Jesper M Jensen (guitar, bass and keyboards) and
drummer Morten Soresen in Aalborg, the heavy metal capital of
Denmark. Soon after, they found Torben Askholm, a male vocalist with
a clear and powerful voice. They then recorded in the Hansen studio
with Jacob Hansen as producer (known for Ancient, Falconer,
Mercenary…) as soon as they had written enough of their own material.
‘Purification’, their debut album, is a pleasant sounding and
surprisingly mature CD, containing their own unique and personal
contributions that could even appeal to the masses. And it’s all
done in a very positive way.
The powerful and clear production sound is immediately noticeable.
The whole CD sounds like a bulldozer or like one hundred carriages
rumbling through the corridor of Osiris. “Hypernosis” floats over
your head, thanks to the acoustic guitars. “Downward Spiral” has a
catchy rhythm and “Purification” (the title song) is a flowing, mid
tempo composition with a spacious sound and charming piano pieces.
The lyrical concept of the album is the fight against inner demons.
It’s a struggle that everyone has experienced, by which a
psychological cleansing is required. This rinsing (purification) is
offered to us by the Egyptian images on the CD cover. Anubis is the
jackal-God in old Egyptian mythology. It’s no wonder that oriental
sounding guitar passages can be heard in “Discrowned”. “Before
Anubis” is a contemplative instrumental piece and “Kingdom of Duath”
is very atmospheric. In between, you’ll find energetic songs such as
the beautiful “In the Comfort of Darkness”. The harder tracks sound
like classic 80s metal, but much longer and with that dark,
progressive touch from the 90s. Torben’s vocals sound reminiscent of
Robert Plant and Queensryche, Savatage and Fates Warning serve as
big role models. It’s a debut that shouldn’t be missed! |
