Progressive Rock |

Review by |

Luc Descamps |
It’s hard to do a
review on this. Trusties makes prog-rock, there’s no doubt about
that. But they use so many influences from other musical styles that
it gets a bit confusing.
This is very well illustrated by the overture: a lot of rhythm
changes, almost cacophonic sounds and a structure that can hardly be
followed.
They’re very good at making calm music. Doing this they sometimes
make you think of the early King Crimson. But they are not afraid to
insert a very heavy guitar solo in a quiet number, meanwhile pumping
up the rhythm. They can build up the tension, making one wait for
the explosion.
At other times, it gets very folky, with medieval influences. Very
strange, when mixed with a metal guitar sound. They don’t fear the
world-music influences either: listen to the eastern sounds on
‘Nothing’.
As you can see, this is an album without boundaries. The musicians
are good: it all sounds quite professional (sometimes one could
think that Steve Howe is playing the guitar).
But perhaps Trusties should have concentrated a bit more on the
heart of their own identity.
They are good at what they do, and they can do different things. I
for one would like to see it all a bit less complicated, a bit more
straightforward.
The most plain tracks on the album are the best (e.g. ‘The ultimate
decision’: swinging, a bit poppy, wonderful guitar, perfectly
arranged or ‘Universe’s end’: a lot more complicated, but still very
logical in its structure with great guitar solos, real progressive
rock, this one) and maybe they should stick to music like that. It
would certainly be more accessible..
This mixture of styles will certainly not conquer the world, I’m
afraid.
