This mini CD from Splinter proves that
Holland is especially blessed with a progressive rock talent. These
five, enthusiastic, music-making guys produce a melodic, yet
powerful, sound.
It’s mentioned in the CD booklet that
Splinter can be compared to Spock’s Beard, Dream Theater, Yes, Focus
and Genesis. Personally, I don’t think their comparable to Genesis.
The first track is “Twist of Fate”.
It starts with rhythmic piano playing which reminds me of the Nits.
Instantly, the rhythm and theme changes help define the
multi-colored mixture of music, which varies from powerful to soft,
depending on which instruments are used. Track two is the title
track and it takes you about 9 ½ minutes into the same kind of
atmospheric feel. It’s not an accumulation of pieces of music, but
to be sure, you’ll need to listen to it a few times. I had to, at
least. The play between the main and sub-themes keeps everything
interesting enough.
Barry, Marcel, Menno and Didier do
just fine with their instruments and, technically, everything’s
good. The voice of the singer, Rock, fits well with this varied
music. The bonus track is more like a built-up conventional pop
song, but in prog style. It’s not bad, but not earth shattering
either.
At first, Splinter’s music seems a bit
confusing, but after a few listening sessions, things start to fall
into place. However, I thought that some of the subjects could have
been played out a bit more. It’s difficult to classify their style
(luckily), but also difficult to describe. It sounds highly
energetic, strong at moments, sometimes withdrawn and then inviting.
In summary, “Reflections” is a mini CD
which is worthwhile and really shows the potential of Splinter.
