Vera "Gothica" |
Bands of distant,
inhospitable places always evoke my curiosity. Holy Dragons comes
from Kazakhstan, a region where the Tien-Shan mountain chain forms
the border between China and the former Soviet Union. Let’s face it:
not exactly a perfect location for a flashy rock career. It requires
some courage and perseverance to have a CD released in those areas.
But this seems to be the sixth album of the band and in their
homeland they sold about 7000 copies of previous work.
Thanks to Metalism we are now able to hear the well-brought fantasy
metal of Holy Dragons. All lyrics are sung in their own language and
for us totally incomprehensible, but it’s the music that counts. And
this release does not yield to western equivalents. The sound is
crystal-clear and what we hear is metal full of twin guitar-solos in
the vein of duo’s like Tipton-Downing (Judas Priest) and
Murray-Smith (Iron Maiden). Eighties metal, brought with a brave
attitude.
Only in ‘Altars Of Liars’ we discover some influences of their
homeland in the shape of mantra-alike mountain hymns, furthermore
this is a western allied composition with a very familiar melody.
Now and then they slow down a bit, for instance at the beginning of
‘The Templars’ and during the bonus track and power ballad ‘Living
On The Edge’. Religious symbols can be perceived in the lyrics, at
least in the titles, for only these were translated in the
biography. A remarkable prestige I would like to mention though…
