“Above and
Within” is the first album of a young, new, Dutch band. Although they
are all in their early twenties, they sound very mature. It has become a
very emotional, sometimes heavy, dynamic, powerful CD.
The
first two songs, “Roses Mean Remember” and “Fading Emotion”, give a
brilliant start to this album.
Especially
the first is very emotional with a beautiful serene middle piece after
which they restart their energetic outburst. Their music has influences
of Tool, but the vocals are more distinct.
The
second song starts and ends with some weird samples and is again a
strong song with a “The Cure” guitarsound.
Paul
is a very good vocalist with a lot of emotion in his voice. The drummer
plays a tight, strong rhythm. The guitarists could have played some more
solos, but they produce a good sound.
The
overall production could have been better, but considering they had no
real producer to help them out, the result is fairly acceptable.
“You
In White” is sung with a lot of affection for a close friend who died.
Only vocals, by Paul and Sandra (a revelation) and an acoustic guitar,
later joined by a cello, make it a very good slow track that will always
score good live because of the personal emotion flowing out of it.
Also
worth mentioning is “End Below”. Some songs need time to get to know
them, especially “Charly” is a good example of this.
The
rest of the songs are not as strong as the ones mentioned. Maybe they
should have waited with their release until they had some more good
tracks, or they could have released an EP. But if they use it as a
ticket to the podia, it should open a few doors. I hope to see them on
some summer festivals, where they surely will surprise a lot of people.
The
CD has also some multimedia extras. There’s a video, some photos and 2
bonus tracks. The prize for the CD is only 8 euros and can be ordered
