Last year, I received the album ‘Kallocain’ for review and I found
that a bit of a strange album for a label such as InsideOut Music,
as it was not the same kind of prog I was used to by this label. No,
Paatos describes themselves as an avant-garde band and key words are
melancholia, strings and a touch of psychedelica. Yet I was quite
impressed by the album. Important factor on the band was the hand of
Porcupine Tree chief Steve Wilson, who produced the album.
Because of the success of the album, InsideOut decided also to
release the debut album of the band, called ‘Timeloss’. This in 2002
recorded album was until then only available in the homeland of the
band, Sweden. This album was produced by the band themselves and I
have to say I enjoy listening to this album as much as I did to ‘Kallocain’.
The album breathes a fantastic 70s atmosphere, mellow and relaxed
and at the end of the album a bit of psychedelica. Next to the laid
back music, the vocals of Petronella Nettermalm are heavenly to
listen to. Here she sounds a touch less than Björk, as on ‘Kallocain’.
Here voce is at times very fragile, but oh so beautiful.
It is a rather short album, with just 5 tracks. But two with almost
8 minutes and the closing track even 12 minutes on the clock. The
album is completed with a video clip of the song ‘Hypnotique’, which
you can view on your computer.
Style and sound wise the album is fairly in the vain of ‘Kallocain’,
with as highlight the song ‘Quits’, which starts with loads of break
beats and ends in a psychedelic cacophony of sound, and with
constant factor in this all, is and stays, the beautiful vocals by
Petronella. So if you enjoyed ‘Kallocain’, you will also appreciate
this one. |
