Progressive Rock

Review by John "BoBo" Bollenberg

Recorded live at the Guildford Civic Hall on march 30th/31st 2001 during the G2 Genesis fan convention, this third live album by one of the world’s best Genesis coverbands is also the farewell disc for keyboardplayer Doug Melbourne who has decided to persue other musical interests. Having had the pleasure of seeing this band live it must indeed be en eery experience for any of the original members to sit in the audience for a change and look at themselves. Re-Genesis produces the classic Peter Gabriel years of Genesis which apart from the music also contains the various costume changes by Tony Patterson whom I have to admit sounds a little less convincing than his predecessor Glyn Protheroe. Like the younger version of Gabriel there’s also the occasional hoarse voice which is welcome with warm applause by the 1200 strong crowd.

After “Live” and “Here we go again”, “Lamb for supper – live 2001” is the band’s third live album and live they are tremendously good getting so very close to the original sound of Genesis. Incidentally also called Steve, guitarist Steve Marsch also sits down playing just like Hackett used to do. Andy Hyam straps the doubleneck guitar around him the resemble Rutherford whereas Doug Melbourne maybe is a little too weighty to convince the world he is the new Tony Banks. Like me, people who have never seen Genesis live, especially in their classic line-up of Gabriel/Rutherford/Hackett/Banks/Collins seeing this band is a true revelation yet I keep asking myself what the strength is of live CD’s filled to the rim with cover versions which are played note for note exactly like the original. Sometimes it’s like listening to an unreleased Genesis bootleg. What I really would like to hear is the band trying to compose new and original material yet written in the style of classic Genesis. If Italian band The Watch can come up with the goods then why can’t they ?
