A
fortnight ago I went to an underground festival in Ghent, Belgium where Legacy
of Darkness struck me in a positive way.
They appeared to be a group from Cologne, Germany already formed in
1999. They gave me their demo CD and they were busy touring now with one
Belgian and two Austrian groups.
Their
compositions are adventurous and complex and they have found a charismatic
front-man in singer Marc Göhring, always entertaining the public in a
glorious way. He reminded me of
Blaze Bailey and Fish. Besides
they were all sympathetic musicians looking forward to the great Wacken Open
Air festival and fond of Empyrium and Green Carnation.
We had a hell of a time !
Human
beings have always been fascinated by the past and the dark Middle Ages filled
with superstition, rituals and damned slaughtering. These are the subjects on this CD; a title like
‘Hexensabbat’ speaks for itself.
The
beginning of the CD is a mysterious illustration of the cover. ‘The curse’
is a mid-tempo song with some acceleration and melodic guitar interventions.
Some of the compositions are faster and lead us to capricious heights
but the brutality is always accompanied by contrasting breaks.
The
group with the 4 Marc’s is still looking for a permanent bass-player
although Jorg Wendt (having his own band ‘Alcera’) is helping them on this
tour
This
rough mix of their music gives us an introduction, but as this demo was
recorded in 2001, they sound more homogeneous at this time. One year of playing together made them mature enough to enter
any German studio and make a first full CD.
With a good production it will sound huge !
