Laten we maar meteen met de deur in huis vallen, dit is één van de beste releases van de laatste jaren in het progressieve landschap. Het Zweedse Magic Pie heeft bij mij steeds in de bovenste schuif gelegen, getuige mijn besprekingen van hun 2 vorige cd’s. Door omstandigheden (brand in de repetitieruimte) heeft het laatste album wat op zich laten wachten, maar met ‘The suffering joy’ hebben ze werkelijk een pareltje afgeleverd.

Na het tweede album Circus of Life heeft zanger Allan Olsen de groep verlaten, zijn plaats werd ingenomen door Ijslander Eirikur Hauksson (o.a. Ken Hensley), duidelijk een charismatische zanger en een grote aanwinst voor de groep.

Het album beschrijft het wel en wee van een mensenleven en begint alvast met de existentiële vragen “What is life? What is death?” in het korte en rustige Questions Unanswered. De eerste 4 nummers horen bij de epic A Life’s Work, vanaf de Ouverture worden alle registers opengetrokken en komt de harde kant van de groep naar boven in een nummer dat doet denken aan Sola Scriptura van Neal Morse. Onmiddellijk wordt ook duidelijk dat zowel de technische vaardigheden van de muzikanten, de productie en de arrangementen er sterk op vooruit zijn gegaan. Opvallend is zeker de interactie tussen keyboards en gitaar, vooral gitarist Eirikur Hauksson speelt hier de pannen van het dak in ware Petrucci-stijl. Er wordt ook moeiteloos van het ene naar het andere muziekgenre of gemoedstoestand gewisseld, één van de grootste troeven van dit album is dan ook de diversiteit. Na het akoestische en vol gevoel gezongen ‘A brand new day’ wordt de titeltrack en tevens langste nummer van het album aangesneden. Dit nummer heeft echt zoveel te bieden dat enkel ernaar luisteren de echte waarde aangeeft: afwisseling tussen metal-riffs en progressieve klanken, enkele gothic invloeden niet in het minst door de aanwezigheid van vrouwelijke vocalen door gastzangeres Maria Bentzen, een pakkend refrein, vingervlugge intermezzo’s door alle muzikanten, Magic Pie schijnt het hiaat op te vullen day Ayreon de laatste jaren heeft gelaten. Headlines is dan weer wat rustiger in wat ik gemakshalve een happy prognummer zou willen noemen, een beetje in navolging van hun Zweedse broeders van A.C.T., hierin illustreert Hauksson overigens dat hij het niet enkel van shredden moet hebben maar ook van gevoelig jazzy gitaarspel. Na de mooie ballad Endless Oceans, opnieuw prachtig gezongen door Hanssen, volgt weer zo’n indrukwekkend muzikale waterval, waarin zowel fusion, neo-prog als jazz gecombineerd worden tegelijk met orientaalse en folky invloeden, de ster is wederom Eriikur Hauksson met gitaarsolo’s in de stijl van Al Dimeola, ook drummer Johanessen heeft hier een belangrijk aandeel. Met Tired krijgen we wellicht het meest aan symfonische rock refererende nummer, van Pink Floyd tot IQ met opnieuw zo’n schitterende gitaarsolo. Het album eindigt met een dreigende ondertoon (In Memorian: in nagedachtenis van de man op de hoes), nog zo’n fantastisch nummer geheel in de lijn van de Zweedse progressieve school, die intussen legendarisch aan het worden is. Neem daarbij ook nog eens de uitstekende productie en het mooie artwork, dit is gewoonweg één van de schoolvoorbeelden van hoe progressieve rock nu moet klinken. Misschien zullen sommigen beweren dat Magic Pie geen eigen geluid heeft zoals hun kompanen van Brother Ape of The Flower Kings, maar dat maakt dit schijfje juist zo boeiend. Hoeft het nog gezegd, dit is een absolute aanrader!
