De provincie Oost-Vlaanderen heeft jammer genoeg niet zo’n goede weerklank als het op organiseren van muziekfestivals aangaat, elk nieuw initiatief wordt dus met veel enthousiasme toegejuicht. Met ‘Once upon a festival’ wilden de organisatoren echter toch niet de klassieke toer opgaan, naar eigen zeggen wilden zij een brug slaan tussen de grote festivals, waar een zekere intimiteit ver te zoeken is, en de eerder saaie en statische kunstvoorstellingen. Naar de programmatie toe lijkt het eerder toch naar de jeugd geöriënteerd, alhoewel de muziekkeuze eerder eigenzinnig kan genoemd worden. Geen echt grote namen, maar vooral groepen van eigen bodem, aangevuld met enkele eerder onbekende buitenlandse acts. Eén van de bekendere namen is Focus, één van de vaandeldragers van de Nederlandse progressieve rock uit de jaren 70 en nog steeds alive and kicking. Jammer genoeg heb ik hun optreden moeten missen, want door pivé-omstandigheden heb ik maar een deel van de tweede dag van het festival kunnen meemaken. Op die manier heb ik trouwens ook de vrienden van space rock groep Quantum Fantay niet gezien, alhoewel ik hen al vaak aan het werk zag. Toch ook een bewijs dat alle muziekgenres aan bod komen tijdens dit festival: Rock, Progressive rock , Postrock , Psychedelic , Ska , Gipsy, Reggae, Folk, World, IDM, D&B, Goa, Jungle, Ragga, Dubstep, Electro, Deephouse, Techno, Minimal, Electronica, Acid, Turntableism, Ambient, Breakcore, Breakbeat , Progressive.

Alohoewel ik dus bijlange niet alle groepen aan het werk zag, was dit meer dan genoeg om te ervaren dat dit festival op een zeer professionele manier georganiseerd werd, voor een eerste editie toch niet evident. Met een gedurfde programmatie (alternatieve muziek en zelfs een vleugje progressieve rock) en een leuke mix van kunst en cultuur mikt men toch op een ander publiek dan de doorsnee festivals.
Naast het hoofdpodium buiten waren er ook nog 2 tenten, één met hoofdzakelijk ambient en psychedelische muziek, de andere meer hiphop, dance en hardcore. De organisatie had ook af te rekenen met enkele afzeggingen, voornamelijk door de welbekende ‘aswolk’. Zo moesten Hydria Spacefolk en Under Byen verstek geven, jammer want die zouden toch ook zorgen voor een portie post-rock, folk en prog. Under Byen werd echter vervangen door Syd Arthus, voor mij toch een aangename verrassing. Deze jongens brachten een interessante mix van van psychedelische en progressieve rock, niet in het minst door de aanwezigheid van violist Raven Bush, die trouwens een neef blijkt te zijn van Kate Bush. Ze komen niet toevallig uit Canterbury, hun muziek leunt immers sterk aan bij de avant-gardistische strekking uit de jaren 70.
Ook al niet zo evident muziek maken de jongens van DAAU, (vroeger Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung), lange muzikale soundscapes, ook hier kan je door de combinatie van jazz en klassiek en het gebruik van cello, viool en andere instrumenten wel een vleugje avant-garde ontdekken.

Hierna kwamen trouwens de jongens van Toman uit West-Vlaanderen, opnieuw post-rock maar dan echt wel van het goede soort met interessante soundscapes. De hyperkinetische drummer zorgt voor het showelement, terwijl Senne Guns uitstekend werk verricht op de keyboards. Bij momenten moet ik hier aan Pure Reason Revolution denken.

Kortom, weinig bekende groepen maar daarom niet minder interessant. Neem daarbij de mooie locatie achter het kasteel van Laarne en de democratische prijzen en je mag van een geslaagd festival spreken. Zelf zou ik toch wat minder tijd nemen tussen de verschillende groepen en de hoofdacts niet te laat plannen, maar ik kijk sowieso uit naar editie van 2011, die gepland staat op 15, 16 en 17 april, noteer het alvast in je agenda.
